"The purpose of life is to serve and to show compassion and the will to help others. Only then have we ourselves become true human beings."

Change For A Change
Who We Are

Our Ministry

Bart's Pantry is an out reach ministry of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Oakland NJ. It is supported mainly by parishioners who volunteer not only food, but their time each month to help assist the food pantries of St. Mary's Church in Newark NJ, Our Lady Help of Christians in East Orange NJ plus those in need in our local community.

On the Saturday after the the third Sunday of each month, one of our three teams of volunteers load up their cars with food donated by our parishioners and deliver it to the food pantries of St. Mary's in Newark, and Our Lady Help of Christians in East Orange. Because of our Change For A Change program, we are now able to supply both pantries with some food each month.

Our Mission & Purpose

Our ministry acts as a conduit between those who have food and/or funds to spare and share, and those who need our help to put more food on their table than they can currently afford to purchase themselves.

Bart's Pantry's mission is to reach out and ask not only our parishoners but anyone who wants to provide food so we can assist  people in need in an atmosphere of dignity and respect. We address not only the needs of St Mary's and OLHC, but also try and help others in our community who may need assistance.

With the recent addition of our Change For A Change program, we have been able to buy some food for both St. Mary's and OLHC each month, plus purchase some Shop-Rite gift cards for those in our commuity in Oakland. Unfortunately, what we have been able to donate is barely enough to help the number of familes they both support due to the recent state cutbacks. Both pantries have had their funding reduced to such a degree they are now almost 100% dependent on donations from ministries like us.

Our Goal

Bart's Pantry has a few goals they would like to reach. First, we want to be able to expand our ministry and accept donations from not only the parishioners of OLPH but from anyone who wants to help us fight hunger. Second, by trying reach out to anyone who wants to make a diiference, we hope to increase our food donations so we can deliver enough food each month to both pantries so they do not have to turn anyone away plus assist those right here in Oakland and the surronding towns.

We are planning to do more awareness with events such as Food Drives and Raffles to promote our ministry and get it in the forefront of peoples minds so when they go shopping each week, maybe they will pick up an extra can of tuna fish or box of pasta and drop it off to us.

Our ultimate goal is to have such a vast amount of food donations each month that we are able to help out not only both St. Mary's, OLHC and local residents each month but maybe other pantries as well.

Our Team

Bart's Pantry is made up of volunteers from Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. We have (3) teams that consist of a team leader, drivers, packers/sorters, and helpers. Each month, one of the three teams packers sorts all the donated items by type a few days before the delivery date. Then, the drivers and helpers of that same team meet at the church around 8am on delivery day. Together they load  all the sorted bags of food in their cars then deliver them to either St. Mary's in Newark or OLHC in East Orange. Each team is responsible to take the food (4) times a year.
